Focus: The Gulf of Mannar, Southeastern India

1. Awareness campaign

  • Pamphlets and stickers (English and Tamil – local language) on coral reefs will be printed and distributed to coastal folk, and school children along the Gulf of Mannar coast. Over 200 schools (primary, secondary and higher levels) are located in the Gulf of Mannar coast.
  • Materials such as Caps, T-Shirts, Pens, calendars etc. with IYOR 2008 logo for distribution to school eco club members and other conservation staff.
  • Awareness campaign through Television media – national, state and local levels - the impact would be more particularly among the public. E.g. In Tamil Nadu and in the proposed Gulf of Mannar area, most of the households have television. Therefore, campaign through television media would be very effective

2. Conduct of local level workshops for fisher folks, conservation staff and other stakeholders - local workshops will be conducted in villages along the Gulf of Mannar.

3. Conduct of national level seminar / workshop for scientific community.
